In this eLearning video we meet Dr Mark Abela who discussed the Aetiology and Epidemiology of Sudden Death, The role of screening in athletes and general population, lifestyle modification and methods of prevention, the local BEAT IT Project.

The video stresses the importance of Responsibility on physicians undergoing athletic screenings, differentiating athletic vs non-athletic ECGs, know about the services available at MDH and when to refer. It is worth knowing that more than 90% of all exercise related SCD actually take place in recreational athletes. These do not often receive as much media attention compared to deaths of elite athletes, with one potentially postulating more SCD numbers than expected. But what about non-athletic individuals? Maron et al (2016) claim that the incidence of SCD in their study cohort was actually three-fold higher in the non-athletic population, partly because of bigger numbers
