Fontana Arte and Max Ingrand
Prof. Francesco Carelli

Fontana Arte is an Italian company founded in Milan in 1932 by Luigi Fontana and Giò Ponti and specialized in glass processing and the creation of furnishing accessories. It is known for the processing of curved glass and for the production of lighting equipment, becoming over the years an important name for design, at the top of the world in the sector.
Max Ingrand was a famous French master glass worker and decorator, artistic director of Fontana Arte for one decade, starting from 1954. During that time, he came up with true design classics, such as the Fontana table lamp, still one of the bestselling products for the company that bears its name. In 1954, he designed an iconic lamp that was originally named 1853.
For design enthusiasts and connoisseurs of the history of the brand, 1853 still remains a sort of nickname today. The first symbol of a timeless design object, also now a best seller and timeless icon, Fontana represents the lampshade par excellence.
